Below you is a huge salt mountain that begins several hundred metres deep and reaches several thousand metres into the ground. Under high water pressure, cavities more than 400 metres high and up to 100 metres wide were washed into this salt mountain. These cavities, also called caverns, store the natural gas that is needed for heating and electricity production in Europe.

Until the Ukraine war, the gas stored here came mainly from Siberian gas fields. Today the gas comes from neighbouring European countries, but above all it is so-called Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), which is landed by ship at the large LNG terminals on the North Sea coast. 

Against the backdrop of man-made climate change, the entire energy sector in Germany will be increasingly converted to renewable energies in the coming years. Hydrogen will play a significant role in this - especially as a storage medium for clean energy from wind and sunlight. That is why new caverns will be built in Jemgum, where the so-called green hydrogen will be stored. This means that the importance of storage facilities here in Jemgum for energy security throughout Europe will once again increase significantly in the coming years.
