Böhmerwold - The Queen of Böhmerwold

What is special about Böhmerwold? Obviously, it is the historic church in front of which we are standing here, idyllically surrounded by old trees. It was built in 1703. Its predecessor was still built of wood and clay. In order to finance the building project, the seats in the pews used to be "sold" to the inhabitants.

The reformed church accomodates a musical treasure: Since 1828, a special organ sits enthroned here on an especially built gallery. There are many stories about this instrument. One of them says that the organ came from the castle chapel in Aurich. However, it is more likely that the master builder Johann Gottfried Rohlfs from Esens acquired an old organ and renovated it for the congregation in Böhmerwold. It is said that it was brought to Rheiderland on two farm wagons. Even though it did not originally come from the castle chapel: The seven-stop instrument is a gem that spreads majestic flair, at least musically. A true queen of instruments.

Today, about 50 people live in Böhmerwold and its neighbouring village Bovenhusen - but far more cattle. For village life is dominated by agriculture. Further south of the church is a characteristic Gulfhaus (Typical Farmhouse of this specific area), which is a listed building and bears witness to the splendour and pride of old Frisian farmers.
